Photo of the Day: Hoot Hoot

I’m excited to say that I took this photo in my backyard yesterday. I live in a suburb of Kansas City, so seeing an owl in my yard isn’t exactly a common occurrence. I heard a ton of birds making all kinds of squawking noises yesterday evening, so I looked outside to see what was going on, and this large owl was starring right at me. I grabbed my camera and took a couple of quick distance shots, then walked closer only to get few blurry shots before she flew off. Coolest nature experience so far since we moved in March! Does it look like she’s is blinking in this photo?

Photo of the Day: Free Love Van

I’m a day behind on posting a photo, but yesterday was so busy. We started the day at 5 a.m. when we woke up to participate in the Hospital Hill run with a few friends. My husband and I ran the 10k in about 57 minutes, which I thought was pretty good considering all of the hills. I placed 169/1189 women. Check out my friend Julie’s blog to see photos and read more about it. After that our group had brunch at a cute downtown restaurant, then we went with Julie to the Liberty Arts Festival. The weather was gorgeous, and we enjoyed that the festival wasn’t overwhelmingly large. Although we didn’t purchase anything, it was fun to look at all the local artists’ talent. And all of that happened before 1 p.m. Below is my favorite piece of “art” from the art fest!

Photo of the Day: Celebration at the Station

I’ve always struggled with getting good fireworks photos, but I think this year’s Celebration at the Station was a success. I used a tripod and had my camera setting on a high ISO, wide aperture, and fairly slow shutter speed (1/6 sec.). This is one of my favorites from the evening. What do you think? Is there anything I could have done to improve it?

Photo of the Day: Rave Run

On Friday night a few of my friends participated in the Rave Run in Kansas City. The Rave Run is a 5k un-timed race through the dark, with lots of bright, flashing, neon lights; people wearing glow glasses, bracelets, and other crazy apparel; and rave music along the route. Since we weren’t racing the clock, it was fun to run alongside my husband and friends. Despite the fact that we held a conversation the entire time, we still finished in under 29 minutes, according to our watch. Obviously I couldn’t carry my Canon 60d while I ran, so my little point-and-shoot had to suffice.

Photographic Prints for Relay For Life

I’ve been team captain for our Relay For Life team for several years, so I’m constantly trying to come up with creative fundraisers. Last year I decided to try my hand at selling photographic prints, and I raised about $250 with that fundraiser. Not too bad! Naturally I want to beat that number this year. If you like my photography, please consider purchasing a photographic print. You can pick one of the Kansas City photos below, or you can pick any photo from my blog. Visit etsy.com to place an order. And if you don’t want a print but you still hate cancer, the American Cancer Society and I will happily accept donations to Relay For Life. Thank you for your continued support!
