Yesterday our church, Platte Woods United Methodist, launched a new contemporary evening worship service. I’ve always enjoyed the organ and traditional hymns since that’s what I grew up with, but the rock band went above and beyond my expectations. This service is going to be a great place for believers, doubters, and everyone in between to come together to discuss and celebrate Christ. If you live in North KC and are looking for a church home, I invite you to give this service a try.

Day 288-289: “Your feet only hurt cause you’re kickin’ so much butt”
The last couple of days I didn’t have a lot of time for creative photography, but I didn’t forget to take photos. Yesterday evening we went to a Health Expo to pick up our packets for the KC Marathon. And this morning, Jerod, his brother Jacob, and I ran our first half marathon. I was overwhelmed with all the support along the route – cheering spectators, encouraging signs, and an array of bands. One of my favorite signs read, “Your feet only hurt ’cause you’re kickin’ so much butt!”
Day 287: A Light in the Dark
Yesterday I was stressed out about my long to-do list. When I got home late from church after loading the sermon slides on the computer, I found my husband vacuuming. He had already taken out the trash, cleaned the cat box, and done laundry. When he asked me what else he could do to help, I replied, “Take a photo for me.” So he enthusiastically grabbed my camera and showed me photos of the moon that he had taken earlier. He was sincere about using his photo on my blog so I didn’t have to worry about one more thing.
As much as I wanted to cheat and use his photo, at 10:07 p.m. this is the photo I came up with. I think I like his better. Some days when I’m feeling down, he’s my light in the dark.
Day 286: Self-Portrait, Gala-Bound
Next month my husband and I will have the privilege of attending our first gala, thanks to a generous birthday gift. We’ll be attending the PANCAN Night of Hope at Union Station. I bought this dress for the occasion about a week ago, and I’ve been meaning to take a photo of it to send to my mom. I figured I might as well turn it into my photo of the day. Now I just need shoes and jewelry … suggestions welcome!
Day 285: My Souvenirs … From Funerals
Yesterday, the day I took this photo, marked the 10-year anniversary of my Grandpa Haffa’s funeral. It’s hard to believe I haven’t got to see him for 10 years. It was one of the hardest times of my life, but I really grew up that year. I learned that hugs from a stranger can be comforting, and that children can comfort their parents. I was only a junior in high school, but I also learned that I could stand in front of a whole crowd of people and shared my family’s memories. Two months later I stood up there again – for my Grandma. This tree was one of the plants given to our family at Grandpa’s funeral. My mom retired in May, so I inherited the tree a couple of weeks ago. The other two plants in my office are from my Aunt Jill’s funeral last year, and my other grandpa’s funeral in February. Is it weird that I seem to collect souvenirs from funerals? Maybe, but these daily reminders keep the memories alive.
Day 284: I told you…
I warned you I’d be posting more fall leaf photos. I just can’t help it – they’re so beautiful!
Day 283: Puppy Dog Eyes
I have a deep love for animals, but I’ve never been a huge fan of large dogs. At least I never thought I’d want one for myself … until I met Dexter. He is just the sweetest, most playful dog! He will lick you and cuddle with you just like a cat, but he never holds a grudge. If you spoil a dog, it thinks you’re queen. If you spoil a cat, it thinks it’s queen.
Day 282: Love Is In The Air
Here are a few sneak peek photos from Saturday’s engagement photo shoot with Jennifer & Brian at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I’ve known Jennifer since 5th grade, but it was great to finally meet Brian and see how happy they are together. And despite what they may say, they’re so photogenic!
(For those who don’t know, I do portraits in the Kansas City area. First-time customers can get the sitting fee and a high-res CD for $99.)
Day 281: It’s “Pink” Month
In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s breast cancer awareness month. Pink is everywhere. I was actually late to work the first day of October because they were installing pink lights on the Broadway Bridge downtown. I don’t mean to complain … awareness is important. By now I think everyone is aware; in my opinion prevention is key. If you’re a female 40 or older, get a yearly mammogram! Now on to the photo.
Day 280: Patching Holes
Well it’s official – we’re moving in less than a month. Earlier this year we had a little accident with the carpet in our apartment. Last night we tried our best to repair it. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing. If we still get our deposit back, I’ll consider this project a success (and one I can laugh at down the road).
