Project 52 Week 27: We’ll Always Remember

Friday and Saturday was our annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life. During Relay we celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Remembering is the hardest, most touching part of the evening. It’s been just over 2 years since we lost my aunt Jill to pancreatic cancer; so many others were missing their loved ones that night too. It’s not too late to make a difference – our Relay is raising money through August 31. You can make a donation here.

P.S. My canvas print of this photo sold for $90 in the Relay For Life live auction … I was beyond excited!

During the luminaria ceremony, we walk the dark track silently as names of those who’ve had cancer are spoken.

 

Project 52 Week 18: A Picture Perfect Evening

I spent some time this past week taking photos around the city. I’m adding to my portfolio so I can sell prints on etsy.com. I’m not in the business to make a profit. I am donating 100% of proceeds from these prints to the 2012 American Cancer Society Relay For Life. My goal this year is to raise $500. Project 52 Week 2: Modern Marvel

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to have a weekly date night with my husband. So after excellent food and drinks at Snow & Company, I shot some night photos of the new Kansas City modern marvel: the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. It just happened to be the coldest day of the year; with the wind whipping and snow just minutes from falling.

Day 348: A Different Kind of Light

I’ve been taking a lot of pictures of Christmas lights lately, so I decided to shoot a different kind of light. Since yesterday brought unseasonably warm temperatures, it was the perfect opportunity to set up the tripod and photograph lights at night. These neon signs light up the front of the Quaff Bar & Grill in downtown Kansas City.

The Quaff Bar & Grill, located on Broadway in downtown Kansas City, is always lit up with its bright neon signs.

Day 341: Blue Moon

On my way to work yesterday morning I saw a giant military airplane sitting at our tiny downtown airport. I was hoping it would still be there on my way home; it would be the perfect photo for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. My husband got to see the plane from his office window as it took off later that morning. “It was hard to miss,” he said. “It pretty much took up the entire window.” If only I had left my camera with him! When trying to figure out what else to take a photo of on my way home, I  noticed the bright moon and cloud formations around it. So I present to you my second-choice photo.

Day 328: Seven Days of Thankfulness (Day 4)

In addition to my family and my job, I’m thankful for where I live. I love Kansas City – it’s not too big, not too small; most of my friends and family live nearby; and we have some great holiday traditions. The Country Club Plaza Lighting Ceremony tradition began 81 years ago. Believe it or not, this was the first year I’ve seen it.  And with such warm weather, it had to be one of the best years!

Day 305: Go Chiefs?

I may not be a huge football fan, but I am proud of the Kansas City Chiefs after their Monday Night Football win against the Chargers, ranking them first in the division. I think I got that right. I guess someone (or lots of someones) was even more excited than I was – this downtown building was lit up in Chiefs colors Tuesday morning.

Day 244: She may not be the President…

… but she’s still famous, at least for Kansas City! Last night we had the pleasure of watching Ida McBeth perform at the Zona Rosa Jazz on the Square concert series. Ida McBeth is a renowned performer at the Blue Room, and I can see why. She has such a strong, full voice, and she’s just full of spirit and energy! I couldn’t pick just one photo. Which is your favorite?

By the way, I do have a friend who was lucky enough to photograph the president when he came to Joplin this spring after the tornado.
