Miss M | Twenty-one months

Whew. My baby is officially getting close to two. She has started putting more words together, saying things like, “Found it!” and “Where’s Sawyer?” (her friend) and, “My turn!” She likes to sit on the potty but hasn’t quite figured out what it’s for. And this spring weather has certainly reminded us how much she loves being outside. She’s tries to ride the Strider bike and has learned proper technique for riding a scooter (but still needs help, of course). She has a huge personality and gets people laughing constantly. Gosh, I sure wish time would slow down.

See how she’s changed since last month.

This was the best photo I could get, because she wouldn’t stand still for a second!

Living Room | Before & After

My poor husband. He works so hard as a middle school teacher, and every spring break, just when he’s ready for some time off, I find another project. Last year we painted our office/playroom and half bath. This year, we painted our living room. And just as we were finishing that, I got an inkling to do our laundry room, too. There’s nothing better than a fresh coat of paint over old, scuffed up paint, and our laundry room had been bothering me since we moved in two years ago! I’m loving the new “cool” tones.

After. It’s just missing wall art and a bit of new decor to tie the new and old colors together!

After. Next project – replacing the dated tiles around the fireplace!

Miss M | Twenty Months

This girly turned 20 months old a few days ago. After a really rough winter, we finally had some relief with a spring-like weekend! What a treat to take the girls on a run to the park this afternoon. Miss M insisted on staying in her church dress, but we changed her out of her tights into comfy pants…hence the weird mismatched outfit. We’re never dressed for the occasion when the girls are in the mood to take photos!

See how she’s grown since last month.

Sound of Music Themed Birthday

I posted photos of my daughter’s fifth birthday last week, but just in case any of you have children who love Sound of Music, I wanted to share a post of some of the fun, simple ways I incorporated the theme. While this is hardly a Pinterest-worthy party, I couldn’t exactly find a lot of ideas out there, either. Forewarning: Despite my better judgement, I did pull movie images from the internet.

Of course we had to have “jam and bread” to make peanut butter and jelly! We also had other sandwich stuff.

I didn’t think she’d go for schnitzel, so we just had basic pasta salad “noodles.”

Most of the other food qualified as “a few of her favorite things.”

The birthday girl is obsessed with Gretel – the youngest character. She wore a flower girls dress, which looks a lot like Gretel’s dress from So Long, Farewell. We do not get fancy with our cakes. I designed an image for the grocery store to print on a frosting sheet to put on top of a 9×13 cake. Then, we let her shape some fondant mountains and cut out little cardboard characters for her to place on the round cake. The best part wasn’t the overall design, but the fact that she took pride in helping make her cake.

We had to have “crisp apple strudel”, of course! I found an easy recipe, and it was delicious! Half of our family had to come the weekend after her birthday party due to winter weather, so we made this at the second celebration.

My cousin made this gorgeous Gretel dress for her, which she wore at her second celebration! (Again, the weather hindered us getting it in time for her original party.) She loved it so much she wore it two days in a row before we made her take it off to wash it.

We copied the Sound of Music logo and turned it into coloring pages. This served two purposes – she got to help with the decorations for her own party, and she included them in the favor bags for her little friends party.

To create less work for myself, I carried the Sound of Music theme into her friends party, too. She invited 5 of her friends from school to meet at a frozen yogurt place, so I just brought some of the decorations, and she helped me create these favor bags. The “brown paper packages tied up with strings” included her favorite things: coloring pages, crayons, boxed macaroni, fruit cups, and chocolate!

Lil’ Miss K | 5th Birthday

And just like that…my firstborn is five years old. It’s been a whirlwind of birthday celebrations this weekend, from her birthday celebration at school and opening gifts from us at home on Friday, to a family celebration on Saturday, to a small froyo party with her closest school friends Sunday afternoon. To say she feels spoiled would be an understatement. She even said a thank-you prayer last night for gifts, friends and family, and cake!

So, what’s she been up to this year? Lil’ Miss K has been busy at preschool and is heading to kindergarten round-up this week. She’s starting to read her Bob books, she loves math and geography, writing and coloring. Her preschool teacher says she’s well-rounded. While she seems to be more cautious than her little sister, she has come out of her shell this year. She’s turned into a leader at her school, she tries new things without giving up, and it turns out that she loves snow skiing (and is pretty darn good at it)! I can’t wait to see what the next year has in store for her.

Check out last year’s birthday here.

Snow Much Fun

Last weekend, we were blessed with 6-inches of snow – the most snow we’ve had in years (and the most my girls have ever seen). It was the heavy kind that sticks to the trees, blanketing everything in a gorgeous white. Perfect for making snowmen. I truly feel for those who lost power or had to drive on slick roads, but for us, we truly enjoyed the beauty and fun of it. (Now, almost a week later, I’m ready for the sun to peek out!) Here are a few favorites from the weekend.
