I was SO excited after capturing this photo – it’s perfect representation of our Relay For Life event on Friday night. It was a huge success – our event raised over $76,000, my team raised over $4600, and I raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society. Tonight is Relay For Life. Tonight, I will celebrate all the progress we’ve made in the fight against cancer. Tonight, I will remember loved ones lost. Tonight, I will fight back against the disease – by raising money & raising awareness. Twenty of my closest friends and family and I will gather together, along with about 400 other participates, to walk the track all night. To do what we can to help create a world with less cancer. I served as the photographer for an important event at the American Cancer Society yesterday – they received a check for $100,000 from Black & Veatch for our Kansas City Hope Lodge, a facility where cancer patients can stay free of charge during treatment. I got to hang out with the Secret Service and this famous man below. Do you recognize him? (Hint: If you live in Missouri or you’re big into U.S. Politics, you should probably know him.) Shamefully, I probably wouldn’t have recognized him if he strolled by me on the street until yesterday.

100 years ago today, the American Cancer Society began the fight of a lifetime – the fight against cancer. With the help of volunteers, they’ve made a lot of progress in that time. In 1913, 1 out of 10 people survived cancer. Today, 2 out of 3 people survive. There is still more work to do, but together, we can finish the fight. Let’s make this cancer’s last century. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, this past weekend we attended Purple Stride, a Pancreatic Cancer Action Network 5k. After seeing my twin cousins’ facial expressions in this photo from the event, I couldn’t help but share it. If you wrote your own caption, what would it say?
Photo of the Day: Cancer Hero
This weekend my family participated in PurpleStride, a 5k run/walk for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. This year’s Kansas City event has raised $297,000 – a HUGE growth for its third year. The best part about the event? It’s more than just a walk. It’s more like a carnival with booths, thousands of people, and a huge kids activity area complete with a blow up slide, face paint, crafts, and popcorn and cotton candy. I love how this event is raising awareness about pancreatic cancer. In 2013 45,220 will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S., and 38,460 will die from it. Hopefully fundraisers like this will change those grim statistics.

I’ve been team captain for our Relay For Life team for several years, so I’m constantly trying to come up with creative fundraisers. Last year I decided to try my hand at selling photographic prints, and I raised about $250 with that fundraiser. Not too bad! Naturally I want to beat that number this year.
