Day 64: Off to a good start

Last summer I took Sarah and Bobby’s engagement photos, and yesterday we were honored to be a part of their wedding celebration. They had a beautiful ceremony and the reception was a blast – from the gorilla groom’s cake, to the awesome DJ, to the homemade pomegranate wine. Congratulations to the newlyweds – we know with your faith in Christ and your positive attitudes, love will endure all things.

Day 63: Letting go

February 17 would have been my aunt Jill’s 52nd birthday. She died of pancreatic cancer on July 3rd. In honor of her birthday, we served a meal at the hospice house where she stayed at the end of her life. It just so happened to be the same hospice house my grandpa passed away in two days prior to the meal. Because I was focusing on Grandpa, I didn’t get a chance to post anything about it. These are the flowers we displayed at the meal. They were once pretty and pink, but I think it’s finally time to discard them. Sometimes letting go of simple things is so hard. I miss Jill every day, so I can’t even imagine how hard it is for my cousins and my mom. At least we never have to let go of the memories.

Day 62: Make-n-take

Thanks to a couple of my crafty coworkers, we’ve started doing a monthly ‘make-n-take’ craft project over lunch. Yesterday we made four cute birthday cards. We even got to try an embossing technique where you stamp clear ink on the card, sprinkle some black powder over the ink, and dry it with a special dryer. I’m sure I didn’t use the correct terminology, but I’m not up on my scrapbooking jargon.

Day 61: My favorite sport

I didn’t play a lot of sports in school, but I went skiing in Colorado with my Dad almost every year from the time I was 6 years old. The last few years we haven’t been able to make the trip, but we still try to have a father-daughter day at Snow Creek. Yesterday I took a half day off work, and we were two of only a handful of people on the slopes! Since it was so deserted, we had a lot of fun goofing off in the terrain park on one of the mini jumps. No injuries to report. 🙂

Day 59: Climbing to new heights

The local Y is having a Mt. Everest challenge from February to mid-March. Different types of exercise are worth so many feet, and the goal is to “climb” to the summit. For example, 30 minutes of running is the equivalent of climbing 1000 feet. My personal goal was to reach the top within a month, and yesterday I made it! I’m flag number nine, and it looks like I’m about the tenth person to finish. I love reaching goals! I think I even get a free Y towel.

Days 57-58: Babies, toddlers, and gifts – oh my!

This weekend was full of celebration! We went to our nephew’s 2nd birthday party in Southeast Kansas on Saturday, and on Sunday I attended my good friend Lauren’s baby shower.

Caleb was very serious about the gift-opening process, and Beth was dying to help.

Day 56: It’s still winter

The 70 degree temperatures were a tease last week – it’s definitely still winter. Local meteorologists predicted 2-4 inches of snow Thursday, but we ended up with rain, sleet, ice, and 6 inches of snow. Unfortunately I don’t think the roads were pre-treated, so the morning commute on Friday was a mess. If we look close, however, we can still find beauty in what God gave us.

Day 55: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover

Yesterday I ate lunch with some coworkers at a local hole-in-the-wall restaurant called The Brick in downtown Kansas City. It had the tastiest looking menu I’ve seen in a long time, and their burgers, sweet potatoes fries, and veggies with hummus were all amazing! I can’t wait to go back some time during Happy Hour. It just goes to show that appearance isn’t everything.

Day 54: Italy bound

Third time’s a charm! After my third trip to the post office with all of my official documents, I finally applied for a passport with my new last name. (On my first attempt I went to a post office that didn’t do passports; on my second trip I got there at 1:30 in the afternoon when they were apparently closed for lunch.) We’re less than three months away from traveling to Italy!
