Day 118: Food For the Soul

My friend Tekia had her Breaking Bread catering event Thursday evening. (My Breaking Bread post goes into more detail about the event.) So much work went into the evening from so many people. Tekia and company spent hours frying chicken and preparing other southern foods, sculpting and painting the beautiful artwork on display, and figuring out the logistics all the way down to seating charts. They did a great job of bringing art and food together.

Day 117: Temptation Strikes Again

I may not have to worry about temptation anymore now that Lent is over, but Esme sure does! We have three kinds of flowers in the house right now, and she’s constantly trying to eat them.

Day 116: Buon Compleanno!

My parents took me out for lunch at Cinzetti’s Italian buffet yesterday for my birthday. I don’t typically eat three plates of food, but it was, after all, a special occasion. Plus, I had to sample everything before our trip to Italy. 🙂

Day 115: After Easter Shopping

Last week I mentioned that I may go after Easter shopping since I have almost no spring decorations. Well, I wasn’t joking. I found several cute items at Target yesterday for half off! This spring sign may be my favorite $3 find! Just a side note: this photo was taken with my new lens; a birthday gift from my parents!

Day 114: A Full House

Platte Woods United Methodist Church had a packed house for Easter. They even added an extra service and offered shuttle rides to help with parking. What a great way to celebrate Christ!

Day 113: One Step At a Time

My aunt Jill passed away from pancreatic cancer last July. So when my family heard about the first pancreatic cancer PurpleStride 5k in Kansas City, we jumped on board. We ran, walked, raised money, and volunteered at the event. It was a huge success, drawing 1100 participants and raising over $97,000! This photo is what it’s all about – the survivors. Out of 1100 people, there were only eight survivors. Eight. There have been almost no advancements in pancreatic cancer in the last 40 years, and the five-year survival rate is only 4%. Hopefully with passionate people like those we celebrated with Saturday morning, those numbers will start to change.

Days 111-112: Mother Earth Needs a Good Cry

Happy Earth Day! I don’t have any bright and colorful nature photos since the last two days have been rainy.

All the gas we use and the toxins we emit each day must make “Mother Earth” weep. Filling up Jerod’s two-door car for $48 on Thursday made me want to cry, too.

I watched the ducks near our apartment play in the muddy rain puddles this morning. They seemed to enjoy it, but they also enjoyed a thorough cleaning afterward.

Day 110: Glimmering Light

A couple weeks ago while riding bikes, Jerod and I stumbled across this random sculpture in what looked to be an abandoned field. I don’t carry my DSLR camera on my bike, so I went back yesterday evening to photograph it. According to the forecast, we’re supposed to have rain every day for the next week, so this may be the last glimmer of sunlight you see on the blog for a while.

Day 108: Mango Goodness

Last night we made these mango smoothies with the mango we got from Door to Door Organics. They were delicious! Here’s our recipe:

1 frozen banana
1/2 mango
5 oz. orange juice
4 oz. vanilla yogurt
10 ice cubes

Blend and serve! Makes two tasty, healthy smoothies!
